WHO IS ELBIT?

Elbit lives inside of me, you and everybody impacted by COVID-19. He is male and female, frightened and brave, and totally human. The first thing our inner Elbit does every morning is check the news headlines, balk at the rising infection and death toll and wonder if the Grim Reaper is about to knock on the door. We all have an inner Elbit to some degree, though it’s far stronger in some than others, and there are times when we struggle to keep it in its rightful place – and it’s worse when we’re cut off from what was everyday life only a few short weeks ago. But through sharing our feelings and frailties, we learn to find humour in our humanness and laugh at ourselves for our reactions and fears. We know we can’t fix this alone, but together we can tighten our frayed nerves and carry on. Why? Because we must!

WHY ‘ELBIT’?

Remember the time after COVID-19 arrived but before social distancing became the new normal? You might recall we were told to bump elbows (Don’t shake hands – Elbit!). The Elbit was the very first change we needed to make in our lives, but it didn’t seem quite real at the time. We social tennis players, pub drinkers, school Mums and others treated the Elbit as a new game – and why wouldn’t we? It seemed such a silly thing to do, and it totally smacked of the Ministry of Silly Walks. Naturally, many made a joke of it because that’s what humans do when they’re worried or confused. After all, how could a Chinese disease caught from eating bats possibly affect us? We didn’t take Elbit seriously because we didn’t want to. We didn’t want to because we are just mere mortals and that’s what we do.

We didn’t take Elbit seriously …..

WHAT’S ELBIT vs. COVID-19 ALL ABOUT?

In my household, I’m the one with the inner Elbit working overtime – a reactive, post-menopausal woman currently in voluntary COVID-19 isolation with two humans, three dogs and a touch of hypochondria. My human companions are my 60-something husband, Ol’ 76 (76 inches = 6’ 4”) and my octogenarian Mum who’s as sharp as she ever was but perhaps a little less athletic. I’m in my late fifties and I’m a writer, and our household is one of millions facing their own COVID-19 crisis. Elbit is our humble story, delivered in 14 installments for anybody who wants to feel a bit better while in self isolation.
